Week 8: The Final Stretch

This final week has been a great way to cap off one of the best summers of my life. I started off in Barcelona, and it finally felt like summer again after spending almost two months in Ireland where the weather is usually cool and cloudy. On the first day, I visited the Sagrada Familia, which was even more stunning in person than I expected. After that, I rented a bike and rode along Barceloneta Beach. The sun, the ocean, and the vibe of the city made it feel like the perfect summer day. The next day was all about […]

Justin Lee – Week 6: Creeping Towards the End

This past week in Dublin was both the end of our “Judging Justice” class and a big moment for reflection. One of the most important things I learned was about the structure of the Irish judicial system and how it compares to the U.S. Supreme Court. I always assumed that the U.S. system was standard, but learning about how Ireland’s courts operate, especially how they select judges and the role of the constitution, made me realize there’s more than one way courts can operate. It challenged my thinking, especially when we were asked which system works better. I couldn’t give […]

Week 5: Belfast/Derry

The standout in school last week has been one of the best lessons I’ve had so far here on politics and the culture of the divide that there was in Northern Ireland, on things such as Bloody Sunday. It thoroughly opened my eyes to how much history isn’t past tense in people’s lives here and expanded my knowledge of how much more there can be than just reading in books. Being able to see it for myself first-hand and being told about it at the same time instantly gave me a different kind of respect for just how much place […]

Week 4: Justin Lee – Guinness Time

This past week in Ireland was full of incredible experiences, both within and out of the classroom. Perhaps most interesting that we learned through doing our internship is the process of launching brand identity globally. I had not realized that so much goes into every detail, from packaging to messaging, even for a brand as iconic as Guinness. This past week, a tour of The Guinness Storehouse made these things that much more real. Walking through the history of the brand and its growth through all seven floors of the experience gave me a new sense of appreciation for the […]

Justin Lee Week 3: Guiding through Galway

In class this week, we studied abortion rights in Ireland and America. My group and I read through one specific court case, and it caused a lot of thoughtful consideration. It made me realize how much different the cultural and legal context here is when it comes to abortion and how recent some of the changes have been. It opened my eyes to the social and political truths of Ireland and made me aware of how laws reflect shifting values. On the weekend, I traveled to Galway, and it was definitely my favorite experience on the trip. We took a […]

Week 2: Dances to dead bodies

It’s only been about two weeks now that I arrived in Dublin. One of the most applicable skills that I’ve learned from my internship within this new week is how to use the company’s software platform more effectively. I had worked with spreadsheets before, but now I’m learning how to structure and dissect data into formats that actually influence real financial decisions. Getting hands-on experience like this is really helping me connect what I’ve learned in the classroom to how things work in the real world. It’s definitely boosted my confidence. One of the sites that truly impressed me was […]
