Brad Gerken Week 8: Conquering the Unknown

As my time spent in Ireland is drawn to a close, it is clear that I have developed into a better person with newfound skills and a plethora of experiences to share. The eight weeks spent in Dublin was an experience that I did not see myself taking part in a year ago and one that I would not trade for anything.  Arriving in Ireland early in June, I was confronted with uncertainty and unknowns. I was dropped in a new place, with new people, starting a new job, and immersing myself in a new culture. At the time, all […]

Brad Gerken Week 7: Bingo is definitely all skill

Drawing my last full week in Ireland to a close, I cannot believe how fast it has all flown by. It felt as if a week ago I was arriving in a new country surrounded by new faces and new culture. I no longer feel out of place walking around town and going about my day in Dublin. I have been fully immersed in all aspects of the culture from work to social. I never expected to be the one giving other people directions around town or what bus to take but it is nice to feel like I belong, […]

Brad Gerken Week 6: Swinging sticks and failing to hit the ball

On what was supposed to be a more calm and laid back week, I somehow managed to tire myself out just the same. From the night spent at the Irish House Party to playing Gaelic sports, I had my fair share of activities and moving around.  On Thursday, our whole group went to the Irish House Party for dinner and a show afterwards. This was definitely an experience which I did not see coming. I went into the night blindly with little knowledge of what was to come. We started the night out with a relaxing 3 course dinner. For […]

Brad Gerken Week 5: History, Baby lambs, and More History

As each week in Ireland flies by faster than the previous, week 5 took one more step towards the end of this program. There was a subtle but nice change of pace this week compared to the last few. Although it still went by fast, each day felt long as we were able to do and experience so much in what seemed like such little time. The weekend trip was also a lot more history based as we were in Northern Ireland and it resparked my interest for the importance of the history across all of Ireland.  Although nearly everything […]

Brad Gerken Week 4: New Views, Old Castles, and Unbeatable Music

It is crazy to think that I am already approaching the halfway point to my time in Ireland. The past few weeks have been nothing but amazing as I’ve truly been able to immerse myself in Irish culture and become comfortable with Dublin and my Internship.  Starting off Week 4 our group took a trip to the Custom House and the Dublin Castle after Monday class. Both buildings were more interesting than I expected as both had their own unique history and stories behind how they became as they are today. Although mostly gone today, underground at the Dublin Castle […]

Brad Gerken: Week 3 – Taking a Locals Advice to Heart (by doing the opposite)

Week three in Ireland was tiring and busy but despite all of the long days, there isn’t a single thing which I regret doing. After a short work week, the group was off to the west coast of Ireland for a two night stay in Galway. Waking up on Friday for the 7:30 am bus was a rough way to start off the weekend but like the week before, a 20 minute stop at the Barack Obama Plaza revitalized me with energy for the day. Arriving at the Cliffs of Moher made the 3 and a half hour bus ride […]
