Campbell Coonley: Week 2 – Learning, Living, and Loving Dublin

As we begin our second week in Dublin, I am shocked by the growth I have experienced in such a short amount of time. I am continuing to familiarize myself with the city, learn new skills at my internship, meet amazing people, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Last Friday marked the end of my first week with TaxAssist Accountants. I am starting to enjoy my job a lot more, especially since I am getting more familiar and confident with the material I am working with. The days have started to pass more quickly and I continue to build relationships with the other interns and employees in the office. It is interesting to learn about the tax system in Ireland, and how different it is than back home! That night, my roommates and I had a delicious dinner at The Little Lemon, then met up with some of our classmates for a fun night downtown.

We had an early morning on Saturday to explore Kilkenny and the Wicklow Mountains. Our first stop was touring the castle, which was beautiful and truly impressive. I enjoyed learning about the history and exploring the gardens afterwards. My roommates and I then walked downtown to explore the streets and stop in small boutiques along the way. We had a delicious lunch at a pub located on the river, then found a coffee shop called Wild Tails Co, Dogs & Coffee which reminded me of my favorite coffee shop, Wagging Tail, back at school. I enjoyed the bus ride through the hills on the way to the Wicklow Mountains, and the monastic site we visited was truly incredible. The rain provided us with a true Irish experience!

On Monday we had our second ACFM315 class, during which we talked about two important cases surrounding same-sex marriage in the United States and Ireland. It was interesting to learn how historical beliefs and ideologies have shaped the courts’ opinions on these cases, and how societal pressures influence decision making. Seeing the bog bodies was definitely the most interesting part of the tour. My roommates and I then went into the city for lunch before visiting the National Museum of Ireland. We ended the day at one of our favorite pubs and enjoyed the live music!

Tuesday began another week at work. I am looking forward to the new opportunities I will encounter this week, and I can’t wait to explore Galway and the west coast this weekend!
