Price Wilson: Dublin Week 6: Haircuts and hard Knocks (Irish Edition)

Looking back, it is crazy to think that I have been here in Ireland for almost 6 full weeks now. Time is passing by so quickly and I feel like before I know it, I’ll be back home enjoying my mom’s cooking and playing with the new puppy she got. But instead of looking ahead, let’s look back at this past week.

The week began with a dinner that was prepaid for and therefore extra delicious at an event labeled in the calendar as “Irish House Party”. When hearing “house party”, you might expect food, music, dancing and mingling, and that is pretty much what this event was. After dinner, we headed to the basement to watch a group perform traditional Irish songs and dance traditional Irish dances, and overall it was a very fun experience. I was a little surprised though when the dancer brought out a broom and started dancing with that too!

Rolling into the weekend, I was super excited for it because there was no day trip or event on Saturday, and that meant one thing: I could sleep in! Aidan had told us earlier this trip that his friend living in Munich, John, would come and visit this weekend, and with an open Saturday, we were able to take him all around the city and show him a ton of our favorite spots. Before we hit the town, I decided it was time to get my hair cut, but two of my coworkers got haircuts this past week, and they both told me not to get my hair cut in Dublin. So keeping that in mind, I called up my good friend Molly (haircut extraordinaire) to give me a trim, and the best part was it was free! It might have made a bit of an awkward first impression with Aidan’s friend, but it was completely worth it.

On Sunday, we learned all there was to know about the Gaelic Games here in Ireland. We learned how to play Gaelic football, hurling, and even Gaelic handball. My favorite game was hurling because I loved how fast paced it was and it reminded me of lacrosse, which I played back in high school. Moving onto Monday, we visited Kilmainham Gaol, which was an old prison turned museum, and it was super interesting to hear about all of the prisoners they held there, as well as how prison reforms affected the place. It was also somewhat of a sad trip because they spent lots of time explaining how so many prisoners were put to death there and how the prisons would get quite overcrowded at times.

Overall, the week was pretty fun and I feel like the time off on Saturday really allowed me to rest and recover at least a little bit from all of the constant travel and excitement going on here. I am super excited to see what these last two weeks in Dublin have in store for me!
