This past week in Dublin was both the end of our “Judging Justice” class and a big moment for reflection. One of the most important things I learned was about the structure of the Irish judicial system and how it compares to the U.S. Supreme Court. I always assumed that the U.S. system was standard, but learning about how Ireland’s courts operate, especially how they select judges and the role of the constitution, made me realize there’s more than one way courts can operate. It challenged my thinking, especially when we were asked which system works better. I couldn’t give a confident answer. Growing up in the U.S., I’m used to the American system, but the Irish one seemed more efficient in certain ways.
I’d definitely suggest checking out Dicey’s Garden. It’s a lively bar with a big outdoor area and a fun crowd, we went there last weekend and had a great time. Although I did spill my drink on a couple of the biggest dudes at the club (which could’ve gone badly), we ended up talking it out and laughing about it. It reminded me that even awkward situations can lead to positive interactions if you handle them right.
One unexpected learning experience was realizing how much I missed Korean food. I didn’t think it would hit me that hard, but after a few weeks, I was seriously craving it. Finding a Korean restaurant here felt like discovering a hidden treasure, and it made me appreciate the comfort of familiar food in a foreign place. I had the marinated pork with udon soup, and it ended up being a very delicious meal. Unfortunately for my friends, they did not end up getting an order as good as mine. While they were disappointed with their meals, I was busy destroying mine.
Internship so far has been getting easier but at the same time sort of dull. I actually prefer the laid-back pace of work however. People take their time, enjoy long meals, and don’t rush through the day. At first, it felt strange, but now I kind of love it. It’s made me realize how fast-paced and intense things can be back home. My internship has also done a lot of team-bonding activities and events, like holding a July 4th barbeque and more recently a soccer match, where our CRO is one of the captains. I was unfortunately too late to register, but it will definitely be a fun game to see.
Overall, I’m just really grateful for this experience — the new friends, the travel, the learning. It’s been unforgettable.
