Kayla Cullinane: Ireland Week 6 (Seals, Sunshine, and the Sea)

Week 6 complete! With each week that I spend here in Ireland I find my time to be even more exhilarating and exciting than the last. I’ve had another amazing week and feel so lucky for the beautiful weather and heatwave Ireland experienced. For the past week there has been a rare forecast of no rain and temperatures above 70 degrees. I definitely took advantage of this and spent most of my time each day outside or walking places instead of taking the bus. Since last week on Wednesday I’ve been spending time with my family and my boyfriend, Stephen, who came to visit. We all had an amazing time and stayed super busy each day!

To begin, on Wednesday night Molly and I went to Johnnie Fox’s for a fun, traditional, and lively dinner with my family. Johnnie Fox’s is the highest pub in Ireland and has live dance shows and music every night. It has scenic views of fields and mountains for many miles. While we were having dinner we noticed a large presence of police and security guards scoping out and roaming around the restaurant. We soon learned that the President of Lithuania was dining there at the same time as us!

On Thursday, I made another visit to forty foot with Stephen. We braved the freezing cold water temperatures for a very short time but spent most of our time there sitting on the rocks and looking out at the many sailboats in the sea in front of us. Later that night we had dinner at Elephant and Castle in the Temple Bar area of Dublin City which was delicious and I would definitely recommend trying! To end the night we met up with some friends at O’Donoghue’s pub where we shared lots of laughs and stories.

We traveled down to my Grandparents house in Wicklow on Friday afternoon. The next day began with an early morning as we all went to Magheramore beach for surf lessons. It was such a hot and sunny day which we thought were the perfect conditions for surfing; however, when we arrived at the beach we saw no waves and were confused how we would be able to surf. Unfortunately our instructor informed us that the water was too calm to surf but offered to take us paddle boarding instead. This ended up being a better alternative as we saw cool caves, seals, and jellyfish. The ocean was so peaceful and Stephen, my sister, and I had fun jumping in and pushing eachother off our paddle boards into the water. That afternoon all of my family, including my aunts, uncles, and cousins met up at Powerscourt waterfall. This is the highest waterfall in Ireland and it is a beautiful sight and definitely worth visiting. We got ninety nines (which melted within seconds) and sat at the base of the waterfall for a while and took in the scenery as the sun began to lower on the trees across the mountains surrounding us. On our way back to my Grandparents house we stopped at the Wicklow Head Lighthouse, which is set on the edge of cliffs right by the ocean. This is such a pretty walk and we had another opportunity to see a seal swimming in the water.

I’m always sad to see everyone leave but I am so happy for the time I was able to spend with them. I am looking forward to visiting Howth in the upcoming week and will be sure to take lots of photos for next week’s blog!
