This past week has been one of the most beautiful and enriching experiences I’ve had on this trip thus far. Our weekend trip to Northern Ireland was filled with history, culture, and scenery.
We began our journey in Belfast, where we visited the Titanic Museum. I have always been super interested in the Titanic and learning about it’s history. The interactive exhibits and artifacts were powerful and truly brought the story to life. Afterward, we went on a taxi tour of the city, where we got to see firsthand the murals and peace walls that tell the story of Belfast’s past. Hearing the guide speak about these past situations from a perspective of a local made the history feel real and recent. The idea that the gates still close each night really shocked me and reminded me how fresh this all is.
The next day, we explored more of Northern Ireland’s sights. We visited the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and walked across it, enjoying views of the cliffs and ocean. Then we made our way to the Giant’s Causeway. It was surreal to be in a place with such geological significance. we decided to take the long way home and climbed hundreds of steps. The view was worth it.
Later that day, we had the chance to hold baby lambs and learn about sheepdogs. Watching the dogs work and hearing about how they are trained was so interesting. There was something incredibly endearing about being around these intelligent animals. Holding the baby lamb was so adorable and it was hard to put him down.
We ended the trip in Derry, where we took a walking tour of the city. Much like Belfast, Derry has a deep and complex history. Walking the city walls and hearing about its past gave me a deeper appreciation for the people who live there.
This week left me with a much deeper understanding of Northern Ireland’s culture, history, and beauty.
