Week 3 in Dublin: Galway: The Trip That Changed Everything

If there is one location that has deeply changed my understanding of beauty, spontaneity, and human relationships, that place is Galway. I was there three days this week, and I can honestly attest that it is one of the most stunning places I have ever enjoyed visiting—despite my years living in different countries and states. With its rich culture, open sea vistas, and the forged unplanned friendships, Galway became more than a place to visit; it was a highlight of my whole experience living abroad.

In complete honesty, the holiday had started in a pretty unglamorous way. Initially, I was staying in a shared hostel with six others, and the shared living space was a bit of a letdown. However, as the days went by, it was apparent that this was a blessing in disguise. Without the ability to retreat to a real comfort zone, everyone was forced to go out, make friends, and take every chance that came along. As such, Galway pulsed with energy, constantly on the move, and immersive.

Most memorable, maybe, was the night when we met a group of Irish teenagers. A casual greeting turned into a weekend of impromptu parties, collective laughter, and an incredible rapport. We strolled through the town in their company, sharing tales of our variegated pasts and building a rapport that seemed miraculously easy to achieve, considering the transitory nature of our acquaintance. It was an endearing reminder that travel not only takes us to new places but also paves the way to new friendships.

Another rewarding part of the last week has been the strengthening relationships I’m developing with my peers in the Connect-123 program. We began as strangers, having come from different schools. Through our respective work placements, weekend excursions, and commutes to and from class together, though, we’ve developed friendships that appear to have lasted far longer than they have. It has been truly amazing to see the interweaving of professional development and social friendship.

This week has been incredibly invigorating on a professional note. Our company has assigned us projects that really are of importance—not busywork, thank goodness. I am challenged and entrusted with actual responsibilities, which has forced me to learn more than I ever thought I would so early in this program. I have gained skills that I know will remain with me long after this internship is over.

In short, Week 3 proved to be the most satisfying week of them all. Galway provided not just a scenic getaway; it was a turning point. It solidified friendships, ignited unexpected discussions, and injected fresh energy into the raw enjoyment of life. My social life is thriving, my internship is meaningful, and I’m starting to feel that I’ve found my groove here.

If you’re ever in Ireland, here’s my heartfelt suggestion: don’t miss Galway. Let it surprise you.
