Lucie Cahill Week 2: Got introduced to hurling!

My second week in Dublin has been off to a great start! I loved our day trip to Kilkenny on Saturday. The castle was beautiful and I had a lot of fun walking around and exploring the town. I especially enjoyed the crafts they were selling at the market outside the castle. I was so impressed by how intricate they were. On Sunday, we went shopping in Dublin and visited the Jellycat store which was really cute. We got gelato from Gino’s which was really good. The second week of internship has been off to a good start. Another intern has joined me from Boston University, and it’s been nice having another person my age to hang out with. He’s given me some tips of places to go. It’s been interesting chatting with the lawyers about their opinions on American politics and discussing some of the cases from our class. Ireland typically looks at the United States and follows their lead in legal decisions. This is shown with the examples of gay marriage, abortion, and the concept of enumerated rights which another solicitor pointed out to me. Another interesting thing I learned at my internship is how different divorce is here from a legal perspective. First of all, the divorce rate is much lower and it is much less common. It’s interesting to reflect on some of the cultural or legal reasons that cause this. It’s much harder to get a divorce, as prenups don’t exist here and there’s a requirement of at least five years of separation first. This really shocked me. My supervisor also showed me a video of a Kilkenny vs. Tipperary hurling match, and it was apparently the most exciting game of all time. The game is similar to lacrosse except it uses a wooden stick to hit a small ball. I’m not a huge sports fan but it was really fun to watch. We went to Dunne’s yesterday, which is my new favorite department store. It has a huge grocery store, lots of nice inexpensive clothes, home decor, and makeup. The weather has also been really nice and sunny lately, which I’ve been loving. Being in Ireland makes me appreciate the warm weather so much more. It’s so nice to walk around without a sweater or a raincoat on. Last night, me and my roommates cooked dinner and sat outside on the picnic tables. Overall, my second week has been great and I’m really looking forward to our trip to Galway this weekend!
