My first week in Dublin has exciting, eye-opening, and surprisingly smooth. Leading up to the trip, I was nervous about the adjustment. I have lived in new cities by myself before, but major changes always bring on new challenges. However, since arriving in Dublin, I have felt more comfortable and happy than any place I have lived before.
My trip across the pond was very seamless. I even got my own row on the plane, which has never happened to me before. My ability to relax (well mostly sleep) on the plane calmed my worries about leaving the states for an extended period of time, and waking up on the plane in Dublin got me excited for the months ahead.
Since arriving, I’ve spent a lot of time getting to know my roommates. We’ve quickly bonded over shared dinners, spontaneous shopping trips, and hours spent exploring the streets of downtown Dublin. Although it is only week 1, we have encouraged each other to make the most of our time here by going out and trying new things together. The pubs have been a fun place to go after dinners downtown or in our apartment.
In addition to going out to eat, we have all made dinners together. Kiki and Emilia are quite the chefs, and impressed me with their homemade vodka sauce and chicken cutlets. I have been enjoying the meals I made in the kitchen, especially because it is not a luxury I am used to at Bucknell. After Emilia taught me her amazing recipe, I have been making chicken almost every day.
Beyond the great food and drinks, exploring the city has been a treat. It is super walkable and easy to navigate. The architecture is so beautiful and the people have been so kind. Despite the gloomy weather, I still find myself excited to get outside and take in something new each day.
On top of walking all over downtown Dublin, I have loved my morning walks to my internship. While I have only been there for two days, Dataships had been a great experience so far. The people are wonderful, and I am already feeling challenged and inspired.
My first week was ended with a welcome dinner with all students and staff in the program. It was great to see everyone and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone on this trip!
