First week, settling into the Dublin, Ireland
Living in Dublin has been a very enlightening and exciting experience that has made me more accustomed to new cultures that I’m not typically familiar with. Getting off the plane at Dublin airport, I was nervous but excited for my experience to come. Although I’ve only been here a few days, I can already tell that Dublin is very different from the cities I’m used to back home in the United States.
For starters, Ireland is beautiful. Here in UCD, my apartment views the grass hills/mountains on one side, and the ocean on the other. The city itself doesn’t have skyscrapers or large buildings. Brownstone buildings are more typical. Another thing that takes some getting used to is that it gets dark very late, around 10 pm, so it feels a lot earlier in the day than it is.
As someone who lives close to New York City, I’m used to taxis, subways, or even just walking to get around. Here in Dublin, the standard transportation system to get around is buses. Although the buses are easy to navigate, the commutes are typically longer than just a simple subway ride. My commute to work involves two bus rides, where I have to transfer from the “S4” bus to the “#27” bus.
I work at Happythreads, a medical scrub company that makes fashionable and comfortable scrubs so medical workers can look and feel good at their workplace. Working there as part of their marketing team has been very educational. Thus far, I’ve been responsible for updating the website in terms of their inventory of sizes. I’ve also had to analyze and review the blogs published on their website to see if they benefit the company’s SEO.
Outside of the workplace, I have been exploring the city with my roommates, Rayna, Emilia, Zoe, Lucie, and Rylie. We’ve gone to the central shopping street in Dublin to buy clothes and groceries. My roommates and I have also been cooking dinner. Emilia and I made spicy penne alla vodka, chicken cutlets, and a Cesar salad on the first night. The. The following night, I made a cheeseburger. I’ve come to love cooking in this apartment, as it is something I’m not used to at Bucknell, considering I’ve only lived in a dorm so far. We went out to dinner for the rest of the nights, where we had Italian food one night and sushi the other.
Although I haven’t been in Dublin for that long, I’ve already grown to love it and feel at home here. The people are very friendly, and the city is beautiful, and I can’t wait for the weeks ahead.
